Golden Axe III is a follow-up to the first two Golden Axe games and is the last release of the series. The video game was published by Sega for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis platform in 1993. The game was only released in Japan. The North American version was released for Sega Channel only.

There is not a very different gameplay featured in this game, compared to the previous versions, yet there are few improvements. Golden Axe 3 brings new characters, new attacks and magic spells, but also junction points where you can choose which path to take.

The storage requirements will increase as additional games are added to the software. The games compiled in this software are reproductions of the original games for use on the Nintendo Switch system. There are some differences in game performance and presentation as compared to the original versions of these games. A Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership is required to access these games.

In this game the object is to travel along a number of truly branching paths and eventually defeat the main boss of the game, the Prince of Darkness. The player can choose different branching paths in this game toward that objective just as in Revenge of Death Adder. The paths in this game are more elaborate and do not loop back together. Many of the characters are good characters that were possessed, and once beaten they are freed. A king turned into an anthropomorphic eagle is a recurring boss who may possibly be Prince Hellbringer's right-hand man, and is playable in VS mode.

Some features were returned to the title that had been cut in previous sequels. Golden Axe III brought back the thieves from the original game, rather than the mages from Golden Axe II. Also, extra lives could be gained by freeing prisoners scattered throughout the levels. The magic system was returned to the original version where all pots are used at the same time, as opposed to the improved system in Golden Axe II that allowed the player to only use as many spellbooks as they wanted.

The release of the prototype received controversy from fans and critics when one of its original developers, Tim Dawson, spoke up in opposition to the lack of any credits on the cancelled game. He also took issue with the fact that the game was described as "buggy" and "janky" when it was actually created under crunch conditions, and that, as a fan of the series, he had worked "long 7 day work weeks" on developing it before it was arbitrarily cancelled for lacking a "wow factor" and being too different from God of War, making him feel "dead inside". This led to Sega Europe issuing an apology and modifying the game's description to remove the offending text, saying that it was a comment on that version of the game rather than the quality of the work itself.[7]

The characters from the original Golden Axe have made cameo appearances in other Sega games. Ax Battler, Gilius Thunderhead and Tyris Flare all make a cameo appearance in the arcade version of Alien Storm. They can be found on one of the in-game television screens; a Golden Axe logo can also be seen during that cameo. Gilius Thunderhead makes another cameo appearance in the game, as part of a panel of judges rating the player's score.

Gilius Thunderhead is also a playable character in Sega Superstars Tennis and Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. The latter also features a racetrack inspired by Golden Axe called "Adder's Lair". Ax Battler and Tyris Flare are available as playable characters in the Easy Mode of the Sega Ages 2500 version of Dynamite Deka. Death Adder also makes an appearance as one of the game's bosses.

The reception was not so positive, many criticized the lack of originality. Golden Axe II is more of an enhanced version rather than a sequel. But "enhanced version" means there are improvements, right? In fact, there are quite a few of them: you can now decide the amount of mana you want to use for your magic; the spells are different (the dwarf has a kind of earthquake, which is much more appropriate); the back attack is now more powerful; enemy AI is a bit better (not exceptional), and you can decide where to throw the enemies. The gameplay is also faster, and the controls are more responsive.

A gamemode returning from the Genesis version of the previous game, the player fights through 15 increasingly challenging duels against a group of enemies. The player's life carries through subsequent stages, so risk increases the worse the player performs. After completion, or death, the player receives a rank depending on how well they performed. In two player mode, players fight alone to the death.

Golden Axe III was once planned for a Western release, with Sega of America commissioning acclaimed fantasy artist Boris Vallejo to create packaging artwork. While the piece was finished, the Western version of the game was never released. However, in line with previous entries in the Golden Axe series, the Japanese version's artwork still draws significant inspiration from Vallejo's fantasy artwork.

The Golden Axe arcade cabinet assigns one button for attacking, another for jumping and a final button for using magic. Using magic will cause all of the enemies on screen to be damaged and effectively acts as crowd control. Each player carries a limited supply of magic (indicated by a meter at the top of the screen) and will use it all at once when the magic button is pressed. Some magic can also re-kill already defeated enemies, adding extra score. This bug is only present in the arcade version. More magic can be collected by attacking the short thieves clothed in blue who appear at certain points throughout the game. Green thieves carry life energy, also represented in the HUD.

The game has enjoyed many years of success on the Sega Mega Drive, and was used in the early days of the console to advertise the system's power over its then-main rival, the Nintendo Entertainment System. Some levels were shortened, but an extra level was added which includes another boss, "Death Bringer", a recolored version of Death Adder. Also in this version is a "duel" mode, which allows players to fight a succession of enemies one-on-one, 12 rounds. "Beginner" is another new mode, allowing you to play the first three stages with easier enemies. A single use of magic takes away only two magic pots and you fight "Death Adder Jr" as the last boss.

The Mega Drive version of the game has been included in numerous compilations, such as 6-Pak, Mega Games 2, Mega Games 6 and Mega Games 10. The game has also been emulated and sold in the form of Sega Smash Pack Volume 1, Sega Smash Pack, Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection, Sega Archives from USA Vol. 1 and Sega Mega Drive Classic Collection Volume 1, as well as services such as PlaySega and built-in to numerous consoles by AtGames.

Decent conversion of SEGA's smash hit arcade beat'em up Golden Axe... decent for PC standards of that time, that is. At least the VGA graphics are faithful although gameplay is far inferior to the original.... "Inferior" is a relative sense, though-- if you have never played the arcade original (or SEGA Genesis version), you won't be disappointed with Golden Axe's addictive arcade fun despite a few cases of "sticky controls" problem.

Overall, Golden Axe is fun in a 'classic' old-school sort of way. The setting, enemy and character design, music, pace, and gameplay are all very good and help to elevate it above its 'standard' gameplay and a banal fantasy plot. If you have played other versions of the game, you might be a little disappointed, though. Two thumbs up!
